How about a weekend at Lizard Island, featuring the stellar wines of Mount Mary, the entire suite of the resort’s activities above and below the water and a Champagne Brunch on the beach on Sunday?

For a couple of years I have worked with the team at Lizard Island to create a world-class wine program and a wine cellar that’s off the charts. From this September onwards we’re hosting wine weekends at two-monthly intervals – the first being this one with Mount Mary and its winemaker Sam Middleton.

So from the evening of Friday September 14 until the following Monday morning, it’s time to explore one of Australia’s iconic vineyards in this rather memorable way.

The weekend features a masterclass on the Saturday evening followed by a dinner at which Lizard Island’s Head Chef Mark Jensen will prepare his signature cuisine to accompany a wide range of Mount Mary classics. Sunday commences with the late-ish Champagne brunch at one of Australia’s most memorable locations. It concludes with a dinner featuring 10 of my favourite Australian wines.

Mount Mary, one of the first vineyards established in the Yarra’s revival of the late 1960s and early 1970s, is famous for its collection of four wines, being the Quintet (Bordeaux blend of red varieties), the Triolet (Bordeaux blend of white varieties), the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Quintet and Chardonnay are two of my thirty-odd Five Star wines.

The Great Barrier Reef’s finest and most northerly island resort, Lizard Island, is accessed with an hour-long flight north and west of Cairns. Under the management of Emilio Fortini it is flourishing as a high-end destination that attracts visitors from all over the world. It has just 40 suites.

There is a small surcharge for guests wishing to participate in the Wine Series program. I’d encourage you to consider this and coming events in the series.
